Wanna Dance?

Two of the most powerful words that can be uttered to a single woman. It can send tremors of absolute joy and delight through a woman's body or it can make them want to run screaming from the room and willing to hide in the bathroom for the rest of the night. Sadly, my most recent experience with those infamous two words fell in the second category.

I sat at a small table at the X Lounge happily listening to the band. I came alone-none of my friends were willing to stay out late on a Wednesday night, so I was just a sitting duck, waiting to be picked off. I was writing notes for a review of the band, when I noticed someone plunk down a martini glass and slosh the contents over my notes. I looked up to see a pale man wearing a cheap patterned silk shirt and khakis.

And he said the words.

I looked up at him and smiled politely. I knew I would have to dance with him. It's part of the dancing karma. Don't dance with him and the guy you've been waiting to come into the bar that you saw a week ago here will never notice you. And you could hear your mother's voice in the background saying that "you never know....."

Trust me mother, this time, I know.

Well, he escorted me to the dance floor and began to fling me around, much like a magician quickly whips a handkerchief around to show that nothing is hiding in the folds of cloth. In his drunken fury, he accidentally whipped me into a wall, which gave me a chance to notice that the really cute guy I wish had asked me to dance was sitting there watching this terrifying aerobic disaster I was being led through. If I could just make it out of this dancing juggernaut, I would march right over to my future dream date and ask him onto the dance floor...

After the music stopped and we applauded the band, I said I was too tired to dance another, but thanks ever so much for this one dance, etc. As I limped back to my little table, I passed the charming fellow, who was chatting to some very lovely creature who just sidled up to him and asked him to dance.

Fuck karma.
