SAN FRANCISCO -- Indigo Restaurant is a very classy restaurant with creative "new American" menu and fine, friendly service. A pair of co-workers left the decision to me one night last week -- I chose Indigo Restaurant because I haven't been there in ages. We had plans to see a movie and arrived between the Prix Fixe menu (5-7 pm) and the Wine Tasting menu. The wait staff was flexible and allowed us to select the wine tasting menu which includes appetizer, entree, dessert and any wines by the glass for $42 (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 8pm to 11pm). The appetizers we selected were all amazing -- after sharing bites, we began to indulge in the potentially tacky family-style practice of the "take a bite and pass it to the right" so that we all shared the appetizers. One of the stars was the St. Andre Brie Gratin was served on Toasted Walnut Bread, with a Dried Apricot-Pineapple Quince Salad ($7.50). The combination of crispy sweet crunchiness, creamy cheese and slightly sour crunchy bread was really well done. The warm baby spinach salad with Dried Cranberries, Spiced Pecans and Port-Balsamic Vinaigrette ($7.25) also went quite quickly. The real winner, in my opinion, was the Oak Smoked Trout served with fingerling potatoes, garnished with frisee, braised onions and a really fabulous horseradish cream ($8.50). I picked the Rock Salt Baked Mahi-Mahi with Kumquat-Bulgar Pilaf, Haricot Vertes, Buerre Blanc and Orange-Honey Glaze ($16.95) as my entree. The fish portion was pretty small but it was tasty. The Bulgar Pilaf was very delicious and the string beans were crisp and tasty. The Grilled Pork Tenderloin was reported to be "excellent" and the Garlic Whipped Potatoes with Cambozola Cheese were exceedingly tasty. The Preston "Faux" Rhone Style wine recommended with this dish was the best wine by the glass on the menu. My favorite entree of the evening was the roasted portobello mushroom risotto -- not too oily with butter, no clumping, not gooey - just right. At $13.50, this was definitely one of the best values on the menu -- we all shared from this plate! By the time dessert came, we had partaken a bit too much of the wine menu and the actual names of the desserts escape me -- we had a chocolate cake/mouse dessert and a pastry-berry dessert. The chocolate dessert was by far the best of the two -- yummy whipped cream! The other was kind of crusty and not as exciting as the chocolate dessert. The lavender creme brulee was not on the menu -- but if you see it, it's a no-miss. Open 6 days a week for dinner (closed Mondays) Jennifer R. Accettola |
